        Ordered a couple to have on hand as these are small and thin and I'm sure will need to be replaced. The size if then though is odd as they are larger then ones I was finding locally so added them to order I was making to have extra of. Used originals now for a year and no issues.

        Are these necessary it seems airtight without it?

        Probably not absolutely necessary. But for $3.00 I'd prefer not to take the chance of losing a batch of beer to infection.

        Yes you need to use the o-ring with the lid. If you do not have a good seal you risk oxygenation of your brew which will produce potential contamination.

        If you can get a seal without the o ring go for it. I would rather spend the 3 bucks for a sure seal than ruin 5 gallons of beer because oxygen or a bug got past the seal.

        These are replacement/backup O-rings. The Fermonster ships with one.

        Yes may not matter with vigorous fermentation but it will when fermentation is finishing. Also would keep keep air from getting sucked I'm during transport..
