I cannot tale about the criticism, which is the oak chips, but give it some time and what a great nose feel, and taste. Bling Pig recipe ? absolutely is great? 2nd time brewing. I must admit it will not disappoint, give it a little bit of patience and I hope it will meet your expectations. If it doesn't, apologies.
Very pleased with the first time, so brewing a repeat! Used Safale US-05.
So good I ordered a second kit
I’ve made this beer from kits purchased from Morebeer. It makes a very nice IPA that is similar to but not a clone of Blind Pig. Each time, I get bottles and do a blind triangle test. Each time my family identifies it as not a clone, but they actually like it better than the commercial beer. I have to use Red Party cups because the color will give away immediately. The clone is a little darker. I’ve even let beer sit a couple of weeks, using clarifiers. Family gets it right evertime. With my system, it makes a beer in the style of Blind Pig and is pretty close, but not a clone.
First time brewing this beer, but like all Morebeer kits the brew day went off without a hitch. Hit the expected OG and then some. Currently in secondary fermentation and hit expect FG and a bit more. Going to dry hop today and package this weekend.
I have never had the original for comparison. That said, this one did make a nice beer.
If you like hoppy beers, this is one you should enjoy. Great aroma and plenty of hop flavor. One of our favories.
so far so good, good numbers after rinse and hydrometer reading after boil. in secondary fermenter right now. added oak for only 4 days to see what effect it has, did not want to go 7 and find out too strong in oak
Tastes great and has a nice finish. Not overly hoppy but has enough of a hop punch to fully enjoy this one. Definitely would order this one again.
Discover the origins of one of the best "west coast IPA's", I leave out the oak chips just for my personal preference. Simple recipe, easy to brew, best recommendation is to make sure you have some ability to do temp control, try not to ferment too warm.
Not as hoppy as i expected it to be. Good taste but I had better IPAs from MoreBeer.
It's a good IPA, not great, I've had much better IPA's from Morebeer.
Like it more than Pliny
Tried this 5 gallon AG kit a little while back, came out great using the recommended WLP001 yeast. Had to order 2 more kits as the 5 gallon batch I kegged didn't last very long.
Brewed this in March 2015 and tasted it after 1 week and then again after 2 weeks from bottling. I did the all grain version. Used a glass 5 gallon carboy for 2 weeks for secondary and also dry hop. One this that was different about this kit was the oak chips. You can really taste the oak chips in this IPA. It tastes very balanced and different from other IPAs. Slwoly the oak flavor started to go away after about 3 weeks. Doesn't taste like the Bling Pig IPA from Russian River but it is a good IPA for more experienced drinkers. I've had mixed reviews with friends and families about this home brew..
Brewed this using the BIAB technique, I crushed my own grain (very fine) and ended up with an OG of 1.080 - fermented a month and yielded a FG 1.016, stronger than average beer. I oaked and dry hopped about 8 days. Nice creamy white head and orang color, great floral bouquet, on the bad side two 20 oz beers knock me out.I had a mishap with the oak, heated in the micro and cracked the container while cooling it to handel - this resulted in my using about 1/2 the oak. As a result the oak is not very pronounce, but once you make it through the hops there is a layer of complexity...Will brew again, but will aim for a 6% -ish beer, not my current 8%+ bruiser.
You could only get better on 4th St. in Santa Rosa.
It has a nice malt flavor, great head and decent flavor but do yourself a favor and leave out or cut back on the oak chips! My batch has been in the keg for over a month and the oak flavor still takes over. I purchased two of these kits and am brewing the 2nd now. I will not use the chips at all and hope for a much better tasting brew.
I made Pliny from extract and that was fantastic. I have started doing all grain and gave this a go. It came out great.
This was my first all-grain kit. I transferred to a secondary and dry hopped (i week), added gelatin and cold crashed (2nd week, for 3 days). By far, this was my best quality, best tasting beer that I have brewed at home. Had my friends and family truly impressed. Wonderful beer that only got better with time. Highly recommend this beer.
This is a great beer and doesn't last long around my house! I've brewed it with and without the oak, and both are great.
I was very eager to brew the Blind Pig as I am a fan of the Russian River Pliny. Brewed the batch per instructions and after the proper fermantation period kegged it. After letting it carbonate for a week I sampled, it tasted a little oakey but figured that after sitting awhile longer it would mellow. It never seemed to mellow out as far the the oak goes to my liking but it was still good. I determined that next time I would remove the oak chips sooner , but other than that this is a really good IPA and will brew again.
ended up missing my SG, which was disappointing. Decided not to oak it. Based on missing the gravity I was initially pretty down on the beer, but actually after some time in the keg it really came around and was a great session IPA.
Added an extra 2lbs of two row. Good taste within a couple of weeks. After a month in the keg it evolved into my best batch ever, comparable to the stuff from Russian River. Had to ration it to my buddies. Just brewed another batch last weekend. Need to be patient and let it do its thing.
Used WLP002 and 1 extra pound of 2-row. I went out of town and left the wood chips in longer than I would next time (10 days). At first I was put off by the wood taste. It has mellowed in the Keg and I am really liking it. I would do chips for 5 days next time.
Brewed this batch in November followed all the steps. I then kegged the beer. It turned out good, not great. I've been a big Russian river fan for years, but I don't really feel this does it justice. Still I feel that some one with more brewing experience could be able to creat this kit to its full extent (Im still wet behind the ears). Good luck to anyone who attempts. The previous review was not a fair assessment of the brew.
First time brewing any beer utilizing oak in the secondary. I found that this beer needs a while for the flavors to "gel" into a final harmonized product (3+ weeks after kegging). If you are impatient, this will taste wrong at first. Once the oak flavors mesh with the hops and the substantial malt backbone, this beer absolutely shines! I have been thoroughly impressed with MoreBeer's ingredient quality, and this kit is no exception. Been brewing Double IPA's for several years, and this recipe is by far the most complex and rewarding of any I have brewed.
