American Oak Cubes (Stavin) - Medium Plus Toast

    Description

Premium, Fire-Toasted Oak Cubes from Stavin

Medium + Toast American Oak will impart flavors of campfire, vanilla, roasted coffee and butterscotch.

These fire-toasted oak cubes are as close as you can come to the full range of flavors you would get from aging your beer in a full sized barrel, unlike convection-toased cubes.

The difference is that convection toasted cubes are made by cutting the stave to size, then passing the small cubes through a toasting chamber. Stavin fire-toasts their staves whole, just like they would when making a barrel, and then cuts them down to size. The result is a gradation of toasting from the surface through to the center of the cube, where each different toast level represents a different flavor set that the oak will give your beer. The result is a much more complex and natural profile; by comparison convection toasted cubes taste one dimensional.

Oak cubes also release their flavor into your beer more slowly than chips, giving you more control over the final degree of impact in your beer. You should plan on an extended aging period of 1-6 months when using cubes. This longer contact time again promotes flavor complexity by allowing all the flavors of the oak and your beer to marry.

Recommended Dosage is 2 oz per 5 gallons for impact equivalent to aging in a brand new oak barrel.

I like the Smaller Cube Size

These American Oak cubes are smaller that what I received in the past, which were quite a bit larger that the French Oak cubes. I like the smaller size because it exposes more surface area than the large cubes. I use 2/3 French and 1/3 American for 3-6 months in stainless tanks.

        Great product

Love the product, hate the packaging. Why bother with a "re-sealable" zip lock type closure on the bag if it's so poorly designed it never fully closes? This problem exists across the entire Cellar Science product line. The cheap silver zip bags that don't zip need to be replaced with something that works as well as the cubes.

Great product for small Home wineries.

I can’t afford barrels, so these really help give my wine some nice oak structure and tannins... leaving the impression that it had spent time in an actual barrel! Very easy to sanitize and use in my 6gal. carboys.

        Use less than 1 oz

If you're oaking a 5 gal batch, definitely use less than 1 oz or you will turn your beer into a tannin rich redwine!Sanitized by steaming on my stove top for 15 mins, worked like a charm.

        Great for long-term Oaking beers

I use cubes rather than chips because they have less surface area and you can age longer on them. I normally use these for my barley wine.

        Worked Great

Great addition to the Malty Brown Ale kit. Added 2 oz. (soaked in bourbon for a week) to the keg and aged for a couple of weeks. Made the brown ale delicious.

        No Fear

I've used oak cubes in my wines, meads and cider. I've never santized them. I just tossed them right into the secondary and have never had a problem.I currently have some in a Chardonnay and I plan to use them to smoke a turkey breast when I rack off them.

Great cubes for longer term flavoring.

Used these in a chocolate oatmeal stout. Gave just enough vanilla flavor and some tannins to ofset the sweetness in the beer. Great way to avoid the sawdust beer your buddy brewed with chips and used too much and left too long. Put these in in a reasonable amount and check your beer every week or two, untill you have the desired effect.
