Witbier Belgian Ale | 5 Gallon Beer Recipe Kit | Mini Mash

    Description

    • Light, crisp flavor spiced with Bitter Orange Peel and Coriander
    • Includes 100% Saaz hops
    • Estimated ABV: 6%
    • Estimated IBUs: 16-20
    • Makes 5 gallons of finished beer

A unique Belgian Ale with moderate bitterness from early kettle additions of Saaz hops. This beer is spiced with Bitter Orange Peel and Coriander, which lends a surprisingly pleasant flavor and aroma. The grain bill, (grain portion of recipe) includes Oats and Flaked Barley, which, when combined with a very special non-flocculating yeast leaves a cloudy, almost-white appearance. Hence, the name wit (white in Flemish). This is a very refreshing style that has a light, crisp flavor. There are some phenolic flavors as well, as you would find in some Belgian Abbey Ales or even German Hefeweizen. Hoegarden and Celis White are commercial examples that represent this style.

    • Makes 5 gallons
    • Estimated Original Gravity: 1.060-66
    • SRM (Color Range): 5
    • IBUs: 16-20
    • Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 6%

        Fun intro to mashing

While I wish the color was a little lighter, the beer is quite good. It has the complexity of a wit and the orange and coriander are the right balance.

        Great beer

This is my 4th batch of beer, and served as my stepping stone to all grain brewing. My all grain batches are still in production, but I kegged this a couple weeks ago and it tastes great! This is my best beer creation by far. Great light Belgian beer and you get subtle taste of the Orange Peel and Coriander. I used the WYEAST smack pack (Belgian Ale) and it fermented well. Moved to secondary for a while. This beer tasted a bit lighter first coming off the tap. A week or two later, it has become a bit more full bodied (but still light). I've enjoyed it quite a bit in both phases.

        FANTASTIC

I am not a belgian beer fan however this beer was fantastic....it wasnt light as the description says...more heavy however spritzy and full of flavor....definitely add an orange to blow up the beer!! I would make this again!!

        Very Good

This kit is really good after aging in the refrigerator for a couple of weeks. I bottle conditioned for three weeks prior. This beer came out around 6.83% abv which is slightly over powering. I would want to back down maybe a pound of the LME to make it a 5to6 percent beer.

Excellent mini mash recipe; remember yeast!

Since the recipe includes wheat and oats, this is a great opportunity to learn to mash. The orange and coriander flavors are just a little stronger than I wanted; next time I will put those ingredients in a coffee filter sachet so I can remove them from the fermenter after a few days.Take note: The product description is a little confusing, bordering on misleading. Although it refers to "a very special non-flocculating yeast," yeast is NOT included with this product. I'm sure the confusion is not intentional, but I'd revise the description so that the grain bill--which is of course included--is not in the same sentence as the yeast, which is not included.I was happy using the White Labs Belgian wit.

        Love It

One of my MoreBeer Favorites. It's an old standby for me. Love the orange peel and coriander flavors...very refreshing. The longer it sits, the better it gets. Friends and family are also big fans.

        Tasty

I really like this recipe, its a tasty wit. I've since moved on to full on all-grain, but still refer to this recipe and just modify it for all grain breweing.

        very good

The kit is nicely packaged and the instructions are pretty clear. used the mini mash kit and it was really nice. This was my first kit from morebeer and I was happy enough that I have ordered 2 other kits. I brewed this on 4/3 and started drinking it on 4/24--maybe a bit too early per the other reviews. The flavorings, especially the orange peel, are VERY upfront, much more than the few commercial witbiers I have tried (Blue Moon, Allagash). But as of 4/28 I can say it really tastes good and I will keep trying it to see how it matures. Have had 3 friends taste and all agree it is good.

        Its good not great.

The color of the beer is more of a darker amber than a true white beer. Kegged it and was ok with a little bite in the after taste. After a week the after taste started to go away a little. When I add a slice of orange, it is better. Almost seems like the corriander is a little too much. Overall its ok.

        Give it time

This is one of those beers you need to give a lot of time to mature. I first started drinking it 2 weeks after bottling and it was a ho hum beer, a little rough in after taste, wheat taste was very light. 4 weeks after bottled, it had turned around and was quite good, a nice smooth wheat with a nice hint of citrus. I could see brewing this again.

        A Great Belgian Wit Beer!

This beer was my first attempt at brewing beyond all extract. I followed the directions exactly for a mini-mash. OG ended up at 10.53 and FG was 10.14 for a 5.1% ABV. Total time in primary was 30 days without racking to secondary, then bottling. Taste was good at 30 days but, fantastic at 60 days and beyond.Color is deep golden orange in appearance. It does have a slight haze to it like other Wits. The head forms a nice lacing around the glass. This beer has a great smell! Coriander and orange is very apparent.Outstanding taste! As mentioned before, the orange spice taste of the beer becomes much more pronounced at around the 60 day mark after bottling. The hops complement the malt of the wheat and oats very well. Similar to mass produced Belgians on tap everywhere in the US but, with a much more robust fullness and flavor. Already had requests for more of this one!
